Don't Forget the Water!
Don't
Forget the Water!
Feeding
the birds all through the various seasons you may
also need to remember that your birds are going to
need water. In the spring, summer, and fall and in
the winter, the birds will need winter, even if it
has been raining or snowing out.
It
can be difficult for a bird to find water during the
hottest seasons, and your providing water is going
to give them exactly what they need to cool off and
for drinking!
Because
of the problems with mosquitoes in certain areas,
it is difficult to have pools of water, birdbaths,
and such without having to worry about the little
pests. One thing that you can do to prevent the mosquitoes
from laying eggs in the bird water is to keep the
water moving, like a water fall or some type of sprinkler
system put together with the bird bath so it isn't
just sitting still.
Birds
are going to love water during the winter months,
and this can be another problem that isn't always
easy to solve. Water in the winter is going to freeze.
Keeping a constant dripping water is going to help
a supply of water from freezing.
Birds
will need water all through the year, but you may
not have the time or the space to install a birdbath
in your landscape. You can use several alternatives
in the landscape instead of having a large birdbath.
You can keep a small shallow bowl to hold water near
the bird feeder; you can also use a dripping water
container similar to that of what a humming bird feeder
would look like.
Birdbaths
are easily available as bird feeders are, and there
are many types, styles, and colors that will fit your
landscape style if you are interested in a birdbath..
If need something easy and useful with out having
to purchase something to water the birds with at this
time, you can use a pot or a planter to keep water
in for your wild feathered friends.
How
do birds cool off?
Birds are going to cool off by walking and playing
in the water as other animals do. Birds will walk
in the water and flap their wings, playing in the
water during the hottest times of the year. In the
winter months, the birds will not play in the water,
but they will occasionally sip at the water in their
beaks as needed to keep hydrated.
Placing
your bird feeder in the shade is going to help the
birds get to the food and stay cool at the same time.
You will not want to put water in with the feed, as
this is a time when the feed will start to mold, grow
fungus and can cause other pests to come to the feeder.
The feed should remain dry when the birds are eating
it, so be sure to dry it after you have cleaned it.
